The legend of King Arthur begins in the early Middle Ages. At this time England was not yet considered a country, it was known as the Kingdom of the Britons. This kingdom was constantly under attack by invading Saxons, Angles and, as a whole, Germanic tribes from southern Scandinavia. Tradition has it that King Arthur was charged with preventing the constant invaders from entering south-west Britain, and so he took it upon himself to be the defender and protector of the Britons against their enemies. Thanks to Arthur’s bravery and his ability to win battles, Britain remained British for some time.
The reverse of the coin shows Arthur Pendragon fighting against his enemies. He holds in his hand his sword Excalibur. Two other warriors protect the king’s back while another has already fallen.
